Match Report by St@tto

Harriers bounced back from two consecutive defeats to beat fancied Grays with a debut goal from Reuben Reid and a twice-taken penalty from Iyseden Christie.

Along with Reid, Paul Bignot came into the team for his debut while Jonny Harkness was dropped in favour of Michael Blackwood, Andy White and Jake Sedgemore dropped down to the subs' bench to make way for the debutants.

Grays were first to show with a sixth minute free-kick from Michael Kightly on the left that beat the wall but was pushed round the near post by Scott Bevan for a corner.  At the other end Reid set up Gavin Hurren who fired Harriers' first clear cut chance wide from 30 yards.  Reid fired in Harriers' fastest goal of the season after 14 minutes; receiving a pass from Bignot with his back to goal he turned well and drilled a shot past Ashley Bayes in the visitors' goal.

Shortly afterwards Simon Russell forced Bayes into action with an angle shot from wide on the right.  Harriers were made to rue that miss on 27 minutes when sloppy defending allowed a high ball to reach Aaron McLean on the edge of the penalty area and he lobbed it over Bevan who was caught too far off his line to react.  Once level Grays began to get on top of the game; a pass through the inside-right channel beat the Harriers offside trap and allowed McLean a clear run at goal, this time Bevan was able to save with his legs and Bignot got back to clear the loose ball away.  Just before the break Blackwood won the ball near his own penalty area and picked out Reid with a searching long ball, Reid laid it off to Christie but he was closed down well before he could get a shot away.

Grays almost took the lead seven minutes into the second half; the dangerous McLean got into the penalty area on the left and shot over Bevan from a narrow angle but Blackwood was in place to head off the line.  Soon afterwards Christie split the Grays defence open with a pass for Reid to chase, he held off one defender but was then blatantly blocked by Jay Smith but the referee saw nothing wrong with the challenge and allowed play to go on.

Controversy surrounded Harriers' second goal just after the hour mark; Bignot's deep cross from the right was handled beyond the far post by Andy Sambrook and referee Mullarkey had no hesitation in pointing to the spot.  Christie took the penalty but his shot was weak and bayes dived to his left to save; the linesman, however, spotted that he had moved too far off his line and the kick was ordered to be retaken, which provoked a furious reaction from Bayes, the second time Christie made no mistake and fired home his second goal of the season.

Grays tried to get back into the game and should have drawn level twenty minutes from the end when a long ball out of defence found McLean who turned Stuart Whitehead easily and then fired horribly wide.  In the closing minutes Christie set up substitute Brian Smikle whose low shot was saved and then a long range effort from Hurren took a deflection that allowed Bayes to save.  Deep in stoppage time Russell's weak headed clearance fell to Tom Williamson 20 yards out but his shot through a crowded penalty area straight at Bevan.
