Match Report by St@tto

A solid all-round performance from Harriers helped them to down high-flying Gravesend & Northfleet and stretch their unbeaten away run in the league to three games.

Skipper Stuart Whitehead did not recover from his hamstring injury in time and failed to make the team for the first time this season; Russ Penn took over the captain's armband in his absence while Jonny Harkness came into the team to take his place, although Mark Yates moved several players around the team so that they were all in their normal positions.

Harriers were quick out of the blocks and could have taken the lead in the first minute when Michael Blackwood got free on the left but fired wide of the far post.  The opening goal came after 18 minutes; Harriers were awarded a free kick in a central position 25 yards or more out from goal, Harkness stepped forward and curled his shot over the wall and into the top corner of the net.  Moments later the advantage was doubled; Blackwood found himself in acres of space on the left wing and square the ball into the goalmouth for James Constable to stab over the line from close range for his first goal in a Harriers shirt.

On the half hour mark Harriers were indebted to Scott Bevan who made a smart save from Sacha Opinel and although the ball went to Jon Keeling he handled it as he jinked his way back onto the box.  Shortly afterwards Bevan flapped at a corner and when the ball was played back into the penalty area Gavin Hurren was on hand to clear leading scorer Charlie MacDonald's shot off the line.  Hurren was in place again in the closing minutes of the half when Keeling attacked on the right and set up Onome Sodje but Hurren's intervention ensured that the worst that was conceded was a corner.

Seven minutes into the second half Harriers could have increased their lead further; Harkness' corner from the right was headed against the bar by a defender and then cleared only as far as Harkness whose cross to the far post was headed against the bar by Constable.  The third goal arrived shortly afterwards; a free-kick in the inside-right channel presented Harkness with another chance, his shot beat the wall and crept inside the near post.

Blackwood could have added his name to the scoresheet twenty minutes from the end, set up by Penn his shot whistled narrowly past the post from 30 yards out.  Three minutes from the end Bevan made the save of the game; substitute Mark de Bolla hit a 25-yard free-kick over the wall only for the keeper to dive to his left to push it away for a corner.  The Fleet did pull one back moments later, Keeling crossed from the left into the goalmouth and Peter Hawkins was on hand to poke it in from close range; it was no more than a consolation, however, and Harriers were not troubled further in the closing minutes.
