Match Report by St@tto

Harriers threw away the chance to cruise into the second round of the FA Trophy after letting slip a three-goal lead against Conference North opposition.

For the third game in a row Harriers fielded an unchanged team but they did not begin the game with the look of a team that had won the last two matches.  The visitors had a lively look about them in the opening stages of the game and had not been for poor shooting could have taken the lead.  On 16 minutes they gave Harriers a scare when the impressive Stuart Whittaker cross from the left and at the far post Thomas Rooney rose to send a looping header against the crossbar.

Harriers gradually began to settle and took the lead after 19 minutes; Simon Russell chipped the ball over the defence from deep on the right to the far post where James Constable volleyed in his third goal in as many games.  Moments later Constable was involved again; breaking free on the left he crossed to the far post towards Iyseden Christie but the cross had too much power and Christie was unable to connect.

The second goal came as Harriers began to exert themselves; Russell jinked his way into the penalty area before scoring with an angled shot that Joe McMahon could only help into the net with his attempted goal-line clearance.  A six-pass move after half an hour had the visitors chasing shadows and ended with Russ Penn testing Sean Lake in the Vauxhall goal with a long-range shot.  Michael Blackwood's cross from the left found Christie shortly afterwards and he swept in his tenth goal of the season to put Harriers in complete control of the game.

Ten minutes before the break a Jeff Kenna cross found the head of Constable but he could not control it and headed wide of the near post.  As the half drew to a close the visitors were handed a lifeline when the Harriers defence went AWOL as John Lawless got to the byline on the right and crossed for an unmarked Lee Furlong to head in from close range.  In stoppage time Constable could have restored the three-goal lead but headed Russell's cross over.

Early in the second period Russell created yet another chance, this time his cross from the right was volleyed wide of the far post by Blackwood.  Harriers then switched off completely at the back and shambolic defending turned the game upon its head.  Luke Reynolds, on as a half-time substitute for the injured Christie, gave the ball away in midfield, it was played out wide to Lawless whose deflected cross from the right was lashed home by Tom Field at the far post.  Then, just four minutes later, Brian Moogan's free-kick from deep on the left picked out McMahon who rose above the statuesque Harriers defence to head in the equaliser.

A long crossfield pass from the left found Russell on the byline who pulled the ball back for Reynolds to tap in but it had already gone out of play before the winger reached it.  Just past the hour mark Harriers had a triple chance to regain the lead; Reynolds' shot was blocked , Russell's follow-up hit the bar and then Jonny Harkness fired the rebound over the bar.  Harriers finally got their noses back in front on 73 minutes; Harkness won the ball at the back and set Penn off on a run through the heart of the opposition, he slipped the ball to his right to Reynolds who fired it past lake and in off the bar.

Harriers were unable to kill off the game and three minutes later Moogan got into the box on the right and hit a dangerous shot to the near post the Scott Bevan could only push onto the woodwork.  In stoppage time Moogan went close with a 20-yard free kick that went just over.  Four minutes into time added on Gavin Hurren attempted a clearance that he sliced just wide of his own goal for a corner; Harriers were unable to clear the corner properly and when the ball fell to Furlong at the far post he hammed it into the back of the net to level and earn his team a replay that looked impossible half an hour into the game.
