Match Report by St@tto

Harriers stretched their winning streak to six games and eight from the last nine as they brought high-flying York City crashing to the ground with a well-earned victory at Aggborough.

Mark Yates made two changes to the team that had knocked Exeter out of the FA Trophy in the previous game, hamstring injury victims Gavin Hurren and Michael Blackwood returned to the team at he expense of Jake Sedgemore and Brian Smikle respectively.  City included top scorer Clayton Donaldson in attack partnered by Craig Farrell instead of the expected Martin Woolford who was on the bench.

Blustery winds made the game difficult but Harriers started the match the better and went close to scoring through Hurren before taking the lead after 12 minutes.  Jeff Kenna's free kick from just outside the penalty area on the left beat the wall and was turned past Tom Evans in the City goal by James Constable to record his ninth goal in ten appearances.

At the other end City gave Harriers some problems; a deep cross by Darren Craddock from the right wing was only punched out by Scott Bevan as far as Manny Panther who fired his shot wide of the far post.  Shortly afterwards Neal Bishop beat Kenna on the wing and tried a shot from a narrow angle but it went straight at Bevan.

Harriers still had the best of the game, however, and should have doubled their advantage when Simon Russell's deep cross from the right beat the offside trap and picked out Iyseden Christie at the far post who headed against the bar.  Constable had the ball in the net again before the break, heading in from Christie's flick on, but his effort was ruled out for offside.

Early in the second half The Minstermen could have drawn level; a pass through the middle picked out Farrell whose lob from 20 yards out looked destined for the net but Bevan managed to reach up an pluck it out of the air.  After 51 minutes the visitors were reduced to ten men after Donaldson was sent off after a dangerous challenge on Harriers' skipper Stuart Whitehead.  Harriers went close to increasing their lead shortly afterwards with a Jonny Harkness free-kick that went narrowly over the bar.

The second goal came ten minutes into the second half; Luke Reynolds, on as a sub for Christie since the interval, received the ball with his back to goal on the edge of the penalty area and turned well and picked out Blackwood at the far post who swept it past Evans.  City should have pulled a goal back with 18 minutes remaining; a ball played through the inside-right channel split the Harriers defence wide open but Bevan was out quickly to block Woolford's shot.

Harkness went close with another free-kick as Harriers looked to close the game out but they were left with a tense closing period to the game after the visitors pulled a goal back with eight minutes remaining; Farrell picked up the ball on the left and curled a shot just inside the far post that was the first one that Bevan had conceded for 451 minutes.  City didn't threaten again, though, and Harriers were able to see out the rest of the game comfortably.
