Match Report by St@tto

Unconvincing Harriers stretched their winning run to three games, and for the second time in four days made progress in a cup competition by virtue of a last minute goal.

With the maligned Setanta Shield low down on most clubs' priority list it was a much-changed Harriers side that took to the field on their first ever competitive visit to Marston's Stadium, only three players in the starting line-up had begun the midweek game at Guiseley.  One of those returning to the side was James Constable who had completed a three-match ban and it was he who gave Harriers the lead midway through the first half.

Harriers had started the game brightly and could have taken an eighth minute lead when Johnny Harkness' 30-yard free-kick was tipped over the bar for a corner by United keeper Sean Bowles.  It was a defensive error that gave Harriers the lead; Jamie Lenton's attempted clearance went straight to Simon Russell on the Harriers right, he slipped the ball inside to Matt Barnes-Homer who rolled it across the face of goal to Constable who was left with an easy finish to claim his 12th goal of the season.

Ten minutes before the break Harriers should have doubled their advantage, Michael McGrath set up Russell who saw his 25-yard shot pushed onto the post by Bowles.  The visitors were made to rue the miss moments later as Owen Storey was allowed to turn on the edge of the penalty area and slot a low shot past Dean Coleman.

After their bright start Harriers' performance faded away once the scores were level and they suffered a setback ten minutes into the second half when Stuart Whitehead was sent off for pulling United substitute Harry Harris down as he ran through on goal.  Harriers could have restored their lead shortly afterwards; Constable's through ball set Brian Smikle clear but he lacked conviction when faced with a one-on-one with Bowles who raced out to save well at his feet.

Midway through the half Harriers had a lucky escape when Storer's right wing corner picked out an unmarked Michael Byron who could only direct his header straight at Coleman.  At the other end a Harkness corner picked out Jon Munday at the far post but his header was weak and straight at the keeper also.  Shortly afterwards Smikle got away on the right and pulled the ball back for Barnes-Homer who shot wide of the far post.

Towards the end of the game Harriers began to get back on top as the game seemed destined for extra time; Jeff Kenna played a good ball in to Iyseden Christie on the edge of the penalty who knocked it back to Russ Penn who fired a low shot just wide of the post.  In the 89th minute Harriers failed to clear a corner from the left and Callum Lloyd fired a good shot through a crowd of players and coleman did well to hold on to it after seeing it late.  With the extra period looming Harriers won the game at the death; Smikle's pass through the middle set Christie clear and he held his composure before slotting his shot past Bowles and in off the post.
