Match Report by St@tto

Harriers were forced to share the points with York after being pegged back to 2-2 despite taking a 2-0 lead in an entertaining game at Bootham Crescent.

With only 16 players available to choose from as a result of suspensions to key players Harriers fielded a changed team in a slightly changed formation, the midfield in more of a 'diamond' formation with Jeff Kenna at the back in front of the defence and newly re-signed Dean Bennett at the front behind the strikers.

Harriers had a dream start when York failed to clear Kenna's long throw from the right and Michael McGrath pounced on the loose ball to fire a low shot past Tom Evans with just 66 seconds on the clock.  York are a far better side than they were when beaten 3-0 at Aggborough earlier in the season, as shown by the pre-match presentation of the December Manager of the Month award to new manager Colin Walker, and played some good football as they tried to get back on terms following this early setback.

A deep cross from the right by Ben Purkiss was nodded back across goal by Micky Wroe to Manny Panther who managed to fire over the bar from just six yards out.  Shortly afterwards Craig Farrell made a good run on the left wing, playing the ball inside to Onome Sodje who helped it on to Panther.  He was challenged by Michael Blackwood before he could get a shot in but the Harriers defence were slow to react and Sodje went close to an equaliser with a shot that rolled across the face of goal.

A little against the run of play Harriers doubled their advantage midway through the half; Kenna's clearance set Matt Barnes-Homer clear on the right, he got to the byline and crossed low to the far post where Iyseden Christie was on hand to fire in his fifth goal of the season from close range.

Farrell shot over the bar after being set up by Purkiss as City continued to press and moments later they had pulled a goal back as a result of sloppy defending by Harriers.  The visiting defence pushed out and stood motionless with arms raised waiting for an offside flag that never came leaving Sodje with a clear run on goal and he beat Bevan with a low shot from a narrow angle.

Three minutes later the scores were level when Farrell beat Bevan with a shot that crept inside the near post from 20 yards out, the goalkeeper will be disappointed to have been beaten in such fashion.  The game flowed from end to end and Harriers could have regained the lead shortly before the break; Barnes-Homer made a good break into the penalty area on the right, his shot was parried by Evans and Blackwood's follow-up shot was blocked.

It seemed certain that there were more goals to come after the break but surprisingly they didn't come.  Both sides created chances but few of the were clear-cut.  Bevan made up for his earlier error with a good dave from Panther's low long-range shot, and also a later effort from sodje, while at the other end Barnes-Homer played a good one-two with McGrath but was unable to control the return and the ball ran harmlessly wide.

Christie had a good chance soon after, stand in skipper Mark Creighton's clearance set him clear on goal on the left but his shot from just inside the penalty area was well saved by Evans.  In the closing minutes Harriers had one last chance to win the game, Brian Smikle played the ball in from the right to Christie and then continued his run into the penalty area to take the return but fired his shot narrowly over the bar.
