Match Report by St@tto

Harriers stretched their unbeaten run to eight games, the longest since April, with a comfortable win over Histon that should have been far more comprehensive than it was.

Showing just one change from the team that knocked Oxford out of the FA Trophy, match-winner Robbie Matthews coming in for the departed Damian spencer, Harriers were quickly onto the attack and took the lead in the fourth minute.  John Finnigan's pass set Lee Baker away on the left wing, he broke into the penalty area and pulled the ball back to Brian Smikle who tucked it in from close range to record his eleventh goal of the season and third in consecutive matches.

Harriers should have had the game wrapped up before the break but were let down by their finishing.  Smikle fired straight at Histon keeper Danny Naisbitt on 16 minutes and on 36 minutes he had the ball in the net again after starting and ending a move involving Matthews and Duane Courtney but he was adjudged to be offside and the goal was ruled out.

In between those two incidents Finnigan, who was pulling all the strings in the centre of the park, combined with Martin Riley who had joined the attack and he in turn set up Baker who charged through the visiting defence before hitting a shot that took a wicked deflection and Naisbitt did well to get across and push it away for a corner.

After the break Harriers found another gear and and ten minutes into the new period doubled their advantage.  Finnigan spread the play with a long pass out to Darryl Knights on the right wing, he rolled it back to skipper Chris McPhee who sent a looping cross into the penalty area where Finnigan had carried on his run and met the ball with a stinging volley that flew into the roof of the net.

Three minutes later Harriers made the game safe; Finnigan, again, won the ball in midfield and advanced through the heart of the Histon defence before sliding a pass to his right to Knights who slotted his shot past Naisbitt and inside the near post.

Harriers created a string of chances and could have won the game far more comfortable than they did.  Naisbitt did well to deny McPhee, Knights and debutant James Lawrie who came on for the last 20 minutes.  A good cross from deep on the left by Knights was just ahead of Matthews who was in acres of space.

In the closing minutes Knights and Courtney combined on the right with the latter playing the ball forward to McPhee who set up Lawrie who hit a shot across the face of goal and narrowly wide of the far post.  In stoppage time a quickly-taken throw by Lawrie gave the ball to McPhee on the left, he pulled the ball back to Knights at he near post who had more time than he realised and shot wide of the upright.
