Referee: Andy Halliday (North Yorkshire) |
Harriers slipped to their sixth defeat in nine games after being unable to breach the home defence despite dominating possession throughout the whole game. MArcus Bignot, Marc Goodfellow and Lloyd Kerry all came into the starting line-up as the squad was rotated again following the draw with Rushden earlier in the week. Before any of the players, either the regulars or those brought into the team, had had a chance to settle Harriers were behind; Andy Bond's 25-yard free-kick hit the wall and fell kindly to Phil Bolland who swept it goalwards and with the help of a deflection to trickled past Jasbir singh and into the bottom corner of the net. Harriers had most of the play from then onwards. In the middle of the pitch the knocked it around well, much better than the home side, but once they reached the final third of the pitch they were toothless. The first decent opportunity fell to Lloyd Kerry; following good work on the left by Darryl Knights who set up Goodfellow to cross to the far post he hit a low shot back across the face of goal that had Tim Deasy in the home goal scrambling but went narrowly wide. The best chance, though, fell to Dean Bennett who crashed a shot against the crossbar from the edge of the penalty area and then Jack Byrne hit the follow-up shot wide. After the interval the game followed a simple pattern, Harriers enjoying long spells of possession and playing some good approach football but rarely looking like they were capable of scoring. They were almost caught out just past the hour mark when they committed bodies forward and allowed Barrow to hit them on the counter-attack; Jason Walker making a penetrating run on the right-wing before feeding the ball inside to Simon Wiles who saw his shot saved by Singh. Late on Harriers came close to an equaliser again, Goodfellow's corner from the right headed over the bar by Luke Prosser. David McDermott suffered another set-back when he came off the bench; two minutes from time he was caught in a heavy challenge and had to be carried from the field on a stretcher. In stoppage time Harriers did manage to get the ball in the net but Robbie Matthews had fouled his marker in the build up and the goal was disallowed. |
