Match Report by St@tto

Harriers' long unbeaten run finally came to an end, defeat against Darlington leaving them with an uphill struggle if they are still to make the play-offs.

Results elsewhere also meant that Harriers slipped down a place to seventh; they face fifth-placed Fleetwood at Aggborough next knowing that another defeat would mean that their play-off hopes would be ended.  Even if they win Harriers will need Fleetwood to drop points in their final two games while winning their own last games too.

Steve Burr made three changes to the side that had drawn at relegated Eastbourne at the weekend; Jamille Matt, Tom Shaw and Callum Gittings all came in with Jack Byrne, Sean Canham and Nick Wright all dropped down to the bench.  The opening stages of the game were frenetic and scrappy; Harriers enjoyed the greater share of possession but neither side was able to get hold of the ball and get any decent football going.

It was 24 minutes until there was real clear-cut chance for either side; Matt Blair's cross from the right found Gittings at the far post but his volley was pushed away by Danzelle St Louis-Hamilton for a corner.  The opening goal wasn't much longer in coming; on the half-hour a free-kick deep on the right was pumped forward to the far post, Matt nodded it down into the path of the late-arriving Keith Briggs who fired in his fifth goal of the season.

Before the break Harriers should have strengthened their position.  Ten minutes before the break Briggs' free-kick from 20 yards beat the wall but dropped just over the bar and then from a short corner three minutes from time Lee Vaughan crossed from the right to the far post where Mark Albrighton headed over.

Darlington came out much stronger after half-time and could have drawn level after 5 minutes; Aaron Brown's corner from the right was met by Ian Miller who glanced a header wide of the far post.  The equaliser came on 66 minutes; a Harriers attack broke down, Jamie Chandler winning the ball deep inside his own half before setting off on a run that didn't end until he was inside the Harriers penalty area and firing past Danny Lewis to score.

Twenty minutes from the end Canham, on for Matt, brought a save out of St Louis-Hamilton after Shaw had headed Briggs' cross back across goal.  Canham should have done better, though, than to shoot straight at the keeper when he had time to pick his spot.  Four minutes later Harriers were made to pay for that miss; Canham again involved as his weak header fell to Chris Moore who broke into the penalty area on the left and despatched a shot past Lewis into the far corner.

Harriers threw bodies forward in the closing stages but never really looked like they would get back into the game, their jaded legs unable to carry them the extra few yards required.
