Referee: Jeremy Simpson (Lancashire) |
Harriers slumped to defeat on their first ever visit to Edgeley Park despite dominating possession in the game thanks to sloppy defending and poor finishing. Callum Gittings returned to the starting line-up in place of Dave Hankin as the only change from the team that had drawn with York City in midweek but Hankin was called into action sooner than expected when Tom Sharpe left the game on a stretcher with a knee injury after just fifteen minutes. With no defensive substitutes on the bench Hankin had to fill in at full back. County took the lead after 21 minutes when Harriers failed to deal with a long ball over the top and Sean McConville was allowed to get into the penalty area, his finish was good and wrong-footed Tony Breeden who was left exposed and could do nothing to keep out the shot. The home team could have doubled their advantage ten minutes later when Andy Halls' cross from deep on the right was headed wide of the far post by Joe Connor. Harriers saw plenty of the ball in the opening half but couldn't make the most of it, didn't trouble Ian Ormson in the home goal and had to go in to the break a goal down. Just eight minutes after the restart Harriers could have levelled the scores when Lee Hendrie's corner from the left was headed wide of the near post by Luke Jones. Harriers were made to pay for that miss two minutes later when Danny L Rowe's long-range shot crept past Breeden and inside the keeper's right-hand post; the keeper will feel that he should have done better in dealing with the shot. Harriers reduced the deficit within a minute; Nick Wright's shot from the edge of the penalty area taking enough of a deflection to take it past Ormson and into the back of the net to record his 12th goal of the season. At the other end McConville could have scored his second goal of the game but fired over the bar after being set up by Danny L Rowe's long cross-field pass. As is becoming customary Harriers piled on the pressure in the latter stages looking for a late comeback. The best chance of the game came with just six minutes left on the clock; Jamille Matt broke into the penalty area on the left, got to the byline and pulled the ball back to the far post where an unmarked Le Hendrie had time to pick his spot but blasted his shot high over the bar. With that miss Harriers' hopes of getting something out of the game disappeared but results elsewhere were favourable and meant that they held on to the final play-off position. |
