Match Report by St@tto

Harriers' first-ever win over Luton Town clinched them a place in the end-of-season play-offs at the very least.

They still hold first place in the league and will be doing their utmost to clinch the title despite Mansfield still having three games in hand and only being a point behind butt hey now know that if they fail in the chase for the ultimate prize they have second chance in the play-offs.

Luton were a pale imitation of the side that had beaten Harriers at Aggborough in August and were, in truth, probably the weakest Luton side Harriers had ever faced.  Harriers had the best of the game in the early stages, looking dangerous whenever they attacked a suspect Town back four.

Leading scorer Anthony Malbon went close to opening the scoring on 12 minutes, latching on to Kyle Storer's through ball only to see his shot pushed away for a corner by Mark Tyler in the home goal.  Town couldn't clear the corner properly and eventually the ball was crossed back into the danger area by Lee Vaughan to Chey Dunkley who headed down for Josh Gowling to lash in his second goal in three games and fourth of the season.

At the other end Scott Rendell and Jon Shaw looked dangerous for Town but didn't receive much service; Rendell went closest to levelling the scores on 24 minutes, heading Jake Howells' free kick against the bar.

Every time Harriers attacked they looked capable of scoring and should have doubled the advantage after 36 minutes when Malbon flicked on Danny Jackman's through ball to Michael Gash who had his header saved by Tyler.  The second goal wasn't long in coming, though, as another Jackman through ball sent Malbon away on the left, he outfoxed the ponderous Steve McNulty before taking the ball into the penalty area, around Tyler, and slotting it in from a narrow angle.

Early in the second half a sweeping move started by Mickey Demetriou saw Gash feed Danny Pilkington on the right whose cross found Keith Briggs who should have done better than head just over the bar.

There was a scare for Harriers with just over 20 minutes left in the game when a free-kick from deep on the left was not cleared properly and Gowling managed to steer it against the crossbar before the ball was hacked away to safety.  Luton then managed to pull a goal back with eight minutes to go; substitute Andre Gray slotting past Lewis from a narrow angle on the right.

Harriers were able to see out time quite comfortably, though, managing to wast a considerable amount of time by keeping the ball down by the corner flag.  They could have restored the two-goal advantage late on when Marvin Johnson's cross from the left was just a little to powerfully hit for Callum Gittings to get his head to at the far post.
