Match Report by St@tto

Harriers' cup run was ended at The Stadium Of Light, beaten by the only goal of the game.

A solid rearguard action ensured that despite falling behind to Charis Mavrias' 5th minute strike Harriers remained in contention throughout what was largely a dull game.

Andy Thorn again made just one change to the team, Jack Dyer coming in for his first start in place of the injured Lee Fowler.  Sunderland boss Gus Poyet, however, made ten changes to the team that he had sent out at Old Trafford in midweek for the League Cup semi-final, Lee Cattermole the only player to start in both games.

Things didn't get off to a great start for Harriers, Josh Gowling's hurried clearance went straight to Sunderland's Greek winger who despatched a quick shot past Danny Lewis and just inside the far post.  Lee Vaughan had already made a goal line clearance at this point and initially it looked as though the visitors could be in for a long afternoon.

On ten minutes, though, Harriers had a great chance to equalise; Vaughan's cross was blocked but the following back-pass was poor and fell at the feet of Michael Gash who saw his shot fumbled by debutant keeper Oscar Ustari and trickle towards the line before the Argentine was able to pounce on it at the second attempt.

From then on Sunderland enjoyed the vast majority of possession but they didn't do much with it and didn't really trouble Lewis, their shooting mostly from distance and entirely wayward after the strike for the opening goal.

The second half followed a similar pattern with the hosts keeping hold of the ball and probing but again not troubling Lewis too much although he did make saves from El Hadji Ba and Santiago Vergini.  It was not until the last ten minutes of the game that Harriers began to push forwards in search of an equaliser.  Dyer shot wide from distance before Danny Jackman fired wide across the face of goal.

Two minutes from the end the best chance came; Callum Gittings, on as a sub, found Gash with a long ball that he knocked down into the path of Freddie Ladapo, making his debut from the bench, but he dragged his shot narrowly wide of the far post.
