Harriers' four-game winning streak came to an end after a lacklustre performance in the Aggborough mud. Gary Whild sprung a surprise in his team selection with both Callum Gittings and Aman Verma out through injury he handed a debut to youth team midfielder Luke Maxwell who slotted in well alongside Kyle Storer and Jack Byrne. The game itself was very scrappy, particularly in the opening half, with the pitch that had been so waterlogged two days earlier that a game was abandoned so muddy that it was impossible for either side to play decent football on it. There was little goalmouth incident in the first half with attempts from Byrne and Marvin Johnson calling Southport keeper David Raya-Martin into action while at the other end Danny Lewis was only tested once with an effort from John Marsden. Early in the second half Harriers had their best chance so far; Johnson's pass through the inside-right channel picking out Reece Styche whose shot on the turn was weak and straight at Raya-Martin. The visitors took the lead out of the blue on 66 minutes, Luke George receiving a pass from the right and hitting a 25-yard shot beyond the reach of Lewis into the far top corner. Harriers huffed and puffed in search of an equaliser but the visitors were content to defend their lead and make it more difficult for Harriers to break them down. With 15 minutes left Maxwell met Storer's left wing corner but his glancing header went wide of the far post and in the last minute Jake Green saw his goalbound shot blocked by David Fitzpatrick at the expense of a corner that came to nothing. |
