Harriers' Promotion Hopes Ended: Rushden and Diamonds 2-1 Harriers
Harriers' hopes of making the play-offs were brought to an end with defeat in a 'must-win' game at Nene Park.
Needing victory to keep the season alive until the last game Harriers huffed and puffed but found the task to be a step to far and were beaten while main rivals Fleetwood were beating Barrow to ensure their place in the top five.
Unchanged from the team that beat Fleetwood on Friday night Harriers were a shadow of the side that played out that epic victory. In blazing sunshine Harriers created chances without threatening and were given a major setback two minutes after the interval when Diamonds were given a penalty that Aaron O'Connor scored.
Leading scorer Chris McPhee gave Harriers a lifeline five minutes from the end with his 18th goal of the season, setting up the possibility of a grandstand finish, but while Harriers were pushing forward they were caught in stoppage time by Rushden's winner from one-time Harriers loanee Ryan Charles.
Deep into stoppage time Harriers suffered a further setback when Jack Byrne was sent-off for an off-the-ball incident.
