A Win At Last: Harriers 1-0 Woking

For once it was Harriers who struck late, Jordan Murphy's header giving Harriers their first win of the season.

Matthew Barnes-Homer made his first start for the club since November 2009 following his loan signing from Aldershot but fellow new arrival Dino Fazlic had to be content with a spot on the bench.  There was also a surprise new signing named on the bench in the shape of Rushall Olympic goalkeeper Jono Brown who had signed earlier in the day.

Barnes-Home had a chance to make an early name for himself after just 15 minutes when Lathaniel Rowe-Turner made a strong run on the left, his cross was flicked on by Murphy to Barnes-Homer beyond the far post but he blasted his shot over the bar when he had more time than he realised to make a better effort.

In truth the first half was scrappy with both sides looking like teams out of form - Woking themselves had lost five of their previous seven - and there was little in the way of goalmouth action.  When called upon, though, Dean Snedker in the Harriers goal did well to keep out John Goddard and Dan Holman.

Had Holman been better with his finishing Harriers could have been in trouble but he headed wide when in space and Snedker later kept out another shot from distance at the expense of a corner.

As the game wore on Harriers grew stronger; the always industrious Ben Whitfield tested Nick Hamman in the Woking goal with a shot from distance with eight minutes left and four minutes later it was his corner that found Kelvin Langmead but his header went over the bar.

The goal came three minutes from the end; Whitfield again involved as he ran to keep the ball in play from an over-hit cross from the right, setting up substitute Matt Young whose cross found Murphy who glanced a header beyond the reach of Hamman to spark an explosion of noise as months worth of frustration was released around the ground.

Harriers were able to see out the remainder of the game and with results elsewhere - Halifax losing at Eastleigh - going in their favour the victory lifted them off the foot of the table.
