Harriers continue to hold the Indian Sign over Cambridge after goals from Taiwo Atieno and Gareth Sheldon earned them their first away win of the season and their third win at Abbey Stadium in five visits. Stuart Watkiss made two changes from the team that drew with Southport on Saturday, bringing in Simon Heslop for his first start in place of Laurie Wilson and Taiwo Atieno replaced Gareth Sheldon in attack; despite having played for 90 minutes two days earlier Martin O'Connor started in the centre of midfield. The two sides, both relegated from the Football League at the end of last season, were evenly matched and to a large extent cancelled each other out in a dour first half. The home team had slightly more possession but Harriers soaked up everything that were faced with. It was not until the closing minutes of the half that there were any real goalscoring chances. United went close first, Stephen Smith with a free-kick from 25 yards that beat the wall but went over the bar. At the other end Simon Russell saw a 30-yard effort tipped over the bar by Darren Behcet and from the resulting corner Russell's cross found Daryl Burgess who headed narrowly over. After the break Harriers began to get on top of the game and were able to create more chances. A sweeping move started by Heslop involved Wayne Hatswell and O'Connor whose raking crossfield pass found Russell on the right wing; his first-time cross to the far post was fired wide by Heslop who had continued his run into the box. Iyseden Christie's cross from the right deflected into the path of Heslop who laid it back to one-time Cambridge midfielder Terry Fleming who shot over the bar from the edge of the penalty area. Harriers took the lead sixteen minutes from the end. The goal was almost a carbon copy of the winner against Woking on Opening Day; Hatswell crossed deep from the left wing and Atieno found space to head over Behcet. There were chances for Harriers to increase their lead now as Cambridge changed formation to 3-4-3 in an attempt to get back into the game and left space at the back. Heslop went close with a long range shot that went only narrowly wide and then Sheldon, on in place of Christie, tried his luck with a free-kick from the left which beat the wall but was easily gathered by Behcet. The result was put beyond doubt four minutes from time; Fleming picked up the ball in midfield and drove forward towards the United penalty area before rolling the ball left to Sheldon who beat Behcet with a shot that crashed against the crossbar and bounced on the line and came out; the linesman, however, had been well placed and signaled that the ball had crossed the line and the goal was given. |
