Match Report by St@tto

Harriers came from behind to record a fully deserved victory over higher graded opposition to progress in the LDV Vans Trophy.

With only John Danby rested and Walsall not letting Taiwo Atieno play Stuart Watkiss fielded as strong a side as he could and was rewarded with probably the best performance of the season so far.

Harriers could have taken an early lead; a great cross from the right found Simon Russell in space on the opposite flank but he mis-hit his shot wide and although Iyseden Christie got his head on it couldn't direct it.  The visitors then took the lead when Mark Jackson brought down Adrian Webster in the penalty area; Guylain Ndumbu-Nsungu took the spot kick and even though Danny Lewis guessed correctly and dived to his left he couldn't quite reach it.

After the opening half-hour Harriers began to take control of the game; a Gareth Sheldon free kick from the right was half cleared and fell to Russell who jinked his way into the penalty area before firing into the side netting.  As the half drew to a close Wayne Hatswell also shot into the side netting from long range and then Sheldon tried a lob from 30 yards out that Sam Russell in the Darlington goal did well to hold under the bar.

At the death of the half Harriers deservedly drew level; Sheldon's corner from the left found Hatswell at the near post whose header was cleared off the line by Neil Wainwright, the ball found its way back out to Sheldon who clipped it back in to Hatswell who made no mistake the second time with a glancing header into the far corner.

After the break Harriers continued to dominate and within the first minute could have gone ahead, Christie muscling his way through the Quakers' defence before lashing his shot wide.  It was one way traffic in the second half as Harriers created chance after chance; a neat build up on the right led to a ball being chipped over the defence for man-of-the-match Sheldon to race on to, his flicked header almost deceiving Russell who just managed to get his fingers to it.  Shortly afterwards Terry Fleming, having probably his best game for the club so far, set up Simon Heslop who beat his marker before curling a low shot just past Russell's right-hand post.

On the hour Sheldon went close again with a 25-yard free kick that beat the wall only to rebound to safety off the post.  Not long after another good Harriers move opened up the visiting defence; Fleming and Christie combined but the latter's pass was just a little too strong for Sheldon and Russell was able to come out quickly and save at his feet.

Sheldon was involved in most of Harriers' best moves and from his free-kick twenty minutes from the end Harriers again went close; Russell was able to save the shot but took two attempts to grab it as Daryl Burgess closed in.

Finally Harriers went ahead with seven minutes to go; Sheldon Martis handled Sheldon's corner in the penalty area and Sheldon himself took the penalty, sending Russell the wrong way with a gently chipped shot.  In the closing minutes Darlington had a rare opportunity, Ryan Valentine curling a shot wide of the far post from the edge of the area and then at the death Simon Russell hit the crossbar with a lob from 20-yards.  Harriers didn't add to their lead but were deserving of their victory nonetheless.
