Harriers ended their season on a high with a fully deserved victory over newly crowned champions Accrington, albeit an Accrington side with a number of senior players missing.

The victory was enough to bring Harriers' points tally to fifty and lift them into a finishing position of fifteenth.  Jonny Harkness didn't manage to overcome the achilles injury that had been troubling him and his place was taken by Gareth Sheldon; Simon Russell was deemed fit enough to start but he lasted just 24 minutes before being replaced by Michael McGrath.

It was another game that had an end-of-season feel to it, for once legitimately, particularly in the first half but Harriers did try to play some decent football in that opening period.  Gary Roberts had already whistled a free-kick over the bar to give Harriers an early scare when Jake Sedgemore and Russell combined on the right to set up Lee Thompson who fired his shot wide of the far post.

Sedgemore took over set-piece duties in Harkness' absence and surprised everyone with a 30-yard free-kick that beat the wall and curled narrowly wide of Daniel Alcock's right-hand post.  The lively Thompson, again realising that he was playing for a contract, should have broken the deadlock on the half hour mark when he was put clear on goal but shot tamely at Alcock.

After the break Harriers had more purpose and took the lead less than three minutes in; McGrath did well to keep the ball in play on the right and then left Phil Edwards for dead as he broke into the penalty area before pulling it back for Thompson to sweep in his first league goal of the season at the near post.  Before too long the lead was doubled; Thompson turned provider and set up Luke Reynolds who tapped in his fourth goal in eight games after his initial header had come back off the post.

On the hour the visitors made a double substitution which almost paid off soon afterwards when Ian Craney, on for the ineffective Steve Jagielka, hit a long crossfield pass to Roberts on the left, his lob beat Danny Lewis but also beat the crossbar and landed on the roof of the net.  Soon afterwards Paul Mullin put Andrew Mangan in the clear but he fired wide of Lewis' left-hand post with the goal at his mercy.

Thompson set up Terry Fleming but he was denied by a great tackle from Daniel Ventre just as he was about to shoot and Alcock was able to gather the ball up easily.  Ventre then found himself in trouble when his late tackle on the lively McGrath as he bore down on goal could have been judged a professional foul, he was let of with just a yellow card, however.  Harriers were comfortable for the remainder of the game and were able to see out time with little threat to their lead for a deserved win.
