Harriers remain on a hot streak after Iyseden Christie's eleventh goal of the season gave them a seventh win in eight matches and sent them through to the last 16 of the FA Trophy. Iyseden Christie returned to the side having been forced to miss the previous game as a result of FA red tape, Luke Reynolds was the man to miss out allowing Christie to resume his fruitful partnership with on-loan James Constable while Brian Smikle started in place of Michael McGrath ad jake Sedgemore came in for the injured Gavin Hurren. It was Constable who looked most likely to break the deadlock and continue his run of eight goals in eight games when he hit an early effort against the crossbar. Former Harrier Billy Jones should have put The Grecians ahead after 15 minutes when Smikle was penalised for a foul on Jamie Mackie and referee Vaughan pointed to the penalty spot. For the second time this season Jones stepped forward to take a penalty against his former club and for the second time missed, this one fired wide of Scott Bevan's right-hand post. Harriers made City pay for the miss just past the half-hour mark when Simon Russell's pass picked out Christie who lofted the ball over Paul Jones from the edge of the penalty area. Poor finishing by both sides prevented further addition to the score in the first half; Dean Moxey picked up the ball in the inside-left channel but fired into the side netting while at the other end Jonny Harkness' corner was only partially cleared and fell to Russell who fired straight at Jones. Constable went close to doubling the advantage shortly before the break when his header from Christie's flick on was cleared off the line by Chris Todd. Early in the second half Mackie had a great opportunity when he broke clear of the Harriers defence but he delayed shooting for too long and Bevan was able to rush out and save at his feet. Shortly afterwards Constable was denied by the woodwork again when he stabbed his shot against the post after Jones had flapped at Harkness' corner. Midway through the half City's other former Harrier Bertrand Cozic could have brought his team level but his 30-yard effort was deflected away for a corner. Late on Sedgemore had a shot saved and the home team went immediately on the counter attack through the inside-right channel with Adam Stansfield firing into the side netting. Back at the other end Christie went close with a 25-yard effort that went narrowly over the crossbar. As City tried desperately to get back into the game in stoppage time they finally managed to get a shot on target and bring a save from Bevan; Harriers failed to clear a corner and Lee Phillips pounced onto the loose ball to get his shot in. Stansfield had the last chance of the game but clear of the Harriers defence on the left wing he fired high and wide of the far post. |
