Match Report by St@tto

Harriers best performance of the season so far saw them destroy high-flying Exeter and gain their first win on home soil of the new campaign.

It was, in fact, Harriers' first home win since March 10 when Northwich were beaten in the FA Trophy semi-final.  Manager mark Yates named an unchanged side from the one that had won at Rushden on Bank Holiday Monday meaning that "new" signing Dean Bennett had to be content with a place on the bench.

Harriers started brightly and could have taken the lead when Andy Marriott spilled a cross but Andy Ferrell blasted the loose ball over the bar.  James Constable opened the scoring after 26 minutes; Michael Blackwood's pass set Justin Richards clear on goal, he took the ball round the keeper but made the angle too narrow and his shot cannoned back off the post but Constable was following up to lash the ball home.

The goal gave Harriers confidence and they pushed forward in search of more; Mark Creighton headed over from a Jonny Harkness corner and Richards was denied again when, after jinking his way into the penalty area, he saw his shot cleared off the line by Dean Moxey.  Shortly before the break Harriers doubled their advantage; Richards and Jeff Kenna combined on the right with the latter sending over a low cross that Russ Penn met with a diving header for his second goal of the week.

Harriers continued to dominate the game after the interval; Constable did well to chase down a lost cause ball on the left wing and cross for Richards who headed wide of the far post as Harriers looked to increase their lead.  Penn could have added another when he brought down Ferrell's deep left wing cross and then lashed it against the crossbar, the luck was not with Richards who headed the rebound over the bar.

Although he had no luck in finding the net himself, Richards was involved again in the build-up to Harriers' third, he fed the ball to Harkness who delivered an excellent cross for Constable to guide past marriott with his head.  Just past the hour mark Harkness could have got on the scoresheet himself, receiving a pass from Blackwood he hit a 30-yard effort straight at Marriott.  The fourth goal was not long in arriving, however, Kenna's pass set Constable on another run, skipping past challenges and slotting the ball past Marriott to complete his hat-trick - the first by a Harriers player in a league match since Bo Henriksen scored one against the same opponents at St James' Park in February 2003.

Harriers relaxed a little with the score at 4-0 and in the closing minutes the visitors could have grabbed a consolation goal or two.  Adam Stansfield crossed low from the right for Lee Elam who steered the ball wide of the far post.  Stansfield then had a shot of his own that Scott Bevan did well to push away from the near post for a corner and then in stoppage time Elam got to the byline and chipped a cross to the far post that Steve Basham headed wide with the goal gaping in front of him.
