Match Report by St@tto

Harriers extended their unbeaten run to four games thanks to a scrappy, single-goal, win over Halifax at Aggborough that extended the winless streak of The Shaymen to five games.

With options limited to him because of injuries to key players, Mark Yates names a completely unchanged sixteen from the one that had been held by Crawley Town three days earlier.  As with the previous game the encounter was scrappy with little action to commend it from either side.  There was a lot of huffing and puffing with no end product, although harriers did manage one move stringing seven passes together on the ground but it came to nothing when Michael Blackwood's left-wing cross was headed clear.

In the first half there was not a single shot on target by either side, the closest that anyone came to breaking the deadlock was Jonny Harkness' 30-yard free-kick ten minutes before the break that drifted narrowly wide of Adam Legzdins' left-hand post.  The home team should, however, have pressed home their numerical advantage gained after just 13 minutes when Anthony Griffith was sent off for stamping on Dean Bennett.  Halifax shut up shop, though and got extra bodies back behind the ball to defend the point that they were holding on to.

Early in the second half The Shaymen came close to opening the scoring when Lewis Killeen was allowed to run through the inside-left channel unchallenged before shooting across the face of goal and wide of the far post.  On 56 minutes Daryl Taylor twisted and turned on the edge of the Harriers penalty area and hit a shot that forced Chris MacKenzie into action for the first time, and then moments later at the other end Russ Penn set up Michael McGrath to fire in Harriers' first shot on target but his 25-yard effort was easy for Legzdins to deal with.

As Harriers began to come to life Blackwood then fired into the side netting, fooling a large portion of the crowd on the opposite side of the ground into thinking that he had actually scored.  With just under 20 minutes remaining Harriers finally broke the deadlock; the ball was played over the defence on Harriers' left for James Constable who was overlapping, he got to the byline and crossed into the danger area where the ball was met by the head of Town defender Cortez Belle who could only direct it into his own net.

Soon afterwards Penn won the ball in midfield and advanced towards goal; with options in the shape of Constable and Justin Richards on either side of him he chose to shoot from outside the penalty area instead, Legzdins beat the effort away.  At the other end Belle went close to amending for his earlier blunder when he headed over from Tom Kearney's free-kick from deep on the right.  The same player then forced MacKenzie into a good save with a low shot from a free-kick that the keeper didn't see until late.  Harriers were able to deal with the corner and hold on to take the three points.
