Match Report by St@tto

Harriers pulled of a "smash-and-grab" raid to scrape through to the second round of the FA Trophy after a very disappointing performance threatened to see them dumped out of the competition.

A spirited Guiseley side outplayed them for much of the game, with more desire and determination shown than by the Harriers players many of whom appeared to have preferred to be elsewhere.  The home team needed just two minutes to take the lead; Harriers' defence was motionless as a long throw from the right found James Hanson unmarked at the near post who was able to fire past Scott Bevan from ten yards out.

It took Harriers some time to get their game moving and it was midway through the half before they threatened Steve Dickinson in the home goal; Russ Penn picked up the ball in midfield and carried it forward before feeding it to Justin Richards in the inside-right channel.  Richards' shot went narrowly wide of the far post with Iyseden Christie approaching rapidly but unable to reach it to divert it into the net.

As the first half drew to a close Harriers almost found themselves two down as they failed to clear a poor corner from the right and Mark Bett was able to get an overhead shot in that Bevan managed to hold on to.  In the last minute of the half Michael Blackwood, one of very few Harriers players to come out of the game with any credit, got into the penalty area on the left and saw his shot to the near post parried by Dickinson.  Penn was slow to react to the loose ball and his shot was blocked and subsequent follow-up effort cleared.

Early in the second half Gavin Hurren went close to an equaliser with a 20-yard shot that Dickinson did well to tip over the bar.  Harriers enjoyed more possession in the second period but struggled to break down the home defence.  There were only 12 minutes left when the equaliser finally arrived; Michael McGrath's cross from the right was deflected into the path of Penn who's shot hit the far post; Christie saw his follow-up blocked but didn't give up on it and managed to knock the ball down to Penn who had continued his run into the box and swept the ball in to level the scores.

Almost immediately Guiseley could have restored their advantage but somehow Dean Walters managed to find the side netting after breaking clean through on the right and clipping the ball over Bevan.  With game in stoppage time and seemingly headed for a replay, Penn was fouled 25 yards from goal; substitute Jonny Harkness stepped up and, calm under pressure, curled the free kick over the wall and into the top corner of the net with Dickinson rooted to the spot.
