Referee: Simon Hooper (Wiltshire) |
Despite a battling performance Harriers returned home from the English Riviera empty-handed after a momentary lapse of concentration cost them the only goal of the game. Harriers lined up with a side that appeared designed to contain the top-scoring team in the Conference, lining-up in a 4-4-1-1 formation with a midfield that didn't include either of the players signed on transfer deadline day - Matt Bailey and Darryl Knights - who were both relegated to the subs' bench. A low-key opening to the game saw a series of free-kicks stop either side gain any sort of flow to their game and it was 10 minutes until there was a shot at goal; United's Chris Zebroski, who had scored twice in the meeting between the sides at Aggborough earlier in the season, fired wide from long range. As the half wore on the home side had the better of the possession but Harriers soaked up most of it well and rarely looked threatened. Shortly before the interval Harriers could have taken the lead when Dean Bennett broke clear through the inside-right channel before dragging his shot wide of the far post. In stoppage time Alex Jeannin set up a chance for Gavin Hurren but he fired over the bar from 20-yards out. The breakthrough came for The Gulls deep into time added on; Harriers half cleared a corner from the right, Roscoe D' sane crossed it back in to the middle of the penalty area where Mark Ellis turned it through the crowded box. After the break the game followed a similar pattern with Harriers proving hard for United to break down and in spells matching their high-flying opponents. There were still few chances in front of goal for either side and just before the hour mark Harriers switched to a more conventional 4-4-2 formation with Matt Barnes-Homer coming on for the ineffective Simon Russell. Iyseden Christie should have got Harriers back into the game as the best of the chances fell to him; Michael Poke in the United goal kept him out, saving a shot with his legs, on one occasion following a good build-up play by Russell and Brian Smikle. Christie also had two other shots go over the bar one of which he should have done much better with from deep inside the penalty area. United substitute Lee Phillips could have doubled their advantage late on but Chris MacKenzie in the Harriers goal kept his effort out; a second goal would have been harsh for Harriers who on the whole had defended well, the goal apart, and deserved to have got something out of the game. |
