Match Report by St@tto

Harriers maintained their unbeaten home record with the fourth consecutive victory at Aggborough, only Mansfield town have a better home cord currently, with their first home win over Oxford United since March 1959 when the visitors were known as Headington United.

For the fourth game in a row Harriers fielded the same starting line-up; the only change to the sixteen, in fact, was the introduction on the bench for the first time of Sam Foley in place of Michael McGrath.

Harriers played some excellent stuff in the first half and comfortably kept the visitors, including ex-Harriers Adam Murray and surprisingly - as he was supposed to be injured - James Constable, under control.  The blossoming partnership in attack of Justin Richards and Matthew Barnes-Homer almost gave Harriers the lead after 13 minutes when after a neat one-two in the inside-left channel Richards took the return and lashed an angled shot just wide of the far post.

The best chance of the opening exchanges for the visitors fell to Constable who snatched at his effort and blazed it over the bar when a gentler touch would have seen in nestling in the back of the net.  At the other end Mark Creighton saw his goal-bound effort bounce over keeper Ben Hinchcliffe only to be cleared off the line by Murray.

An excellent move led to the opening goal midway through the half; Richards received the ball from the right, his step-over fooled the defence letting it run to Barnes-Homer who slid it forward into the path of Richards who crossed low to the near post where his strike-partner had continued his run to steer it into the net for his third goal in successive games and fifth overall for the season.  Shortly afterwards Lee Baker went close to doubling the advantage when he cut in from the left but his shot from outside the penalty area with his weaker foot didn't have enough power to trouble Hinchcliffe.

Harriers did manage to get the ball in the net again on 27 minutes; Baker's deep cross from the left found the head of Richards at the far post but his effort was ruled out for offside.  At the other end Adam Bartlett had to be at his best to keep out two efforts from United wing-back Lewis Haldane; the stiker on loan from Bristol Rovers having his shots from the edge of the penalty area expertly pushed away for corners.

After the break United found another gear and pushed forward far more, enjoying the vast majority of possession and forcing Harriers into a staunch rearguard action.  Things may have been different, however, had Russ Penn not blasted over the bar early in the half after being put in the clear by Martin Brittain's long pass.

Bartlett was called into action again on 56 minutes; a pass through the inside-right channel put Murray in but his fierce shot was pushed over the bar by the keeper.  Just before the hour mark an equaliser looked certain when a corner from the left caused mayhem in the goalmouth and after a brief scramble the ball hacked away for another corner.

Harriers did manage some forays into the United half but Richards had left his shooting boots at home and after being put clear by Creighton's lofted pass he blasted over the bar.  The same player also had Harriers' only on-target attempt of the half, four minutes from time, but after a good turn on the edge of the area his low shot was pushed away by Hinchcliffe for a corner.  Despite not being able to finish the game off, Harriers held on to soak up the pressure and take the points that lifted them to ninth in the table.
