Harriers recorded their first opening day victory since 2005 with a narrow win over newly promoted Hayes & Yeading United at sunny Aggborough. Two new players, Liam Dolman and Gavin Caines, were introduced for their Harriers debuts leaving nine players from last season in the starting line-up despite the summer of upheaval in the squad. The visitors started the game brightly and enjoyed some good possession but without looking likely to break the deadlock. Harriers were slow out of the blocks, looking a little nervous perhaps about the prospect of failing to win the opening fixture against newly promoted opposition. 24 minutes were on the clock before Harriers had a decent chance to open the scoring, but Lee Baker's free-kick was poorly struck and hit the wall. The deadlock was broken ten minutes before the break; Chris McPhee did well on the left wing, his low cross was helped on by David McDermott to last season's top scorer Matthew Barnes-Homer who tucked his shot into the bottom corner to Simon Overland's left. The goal gave Harriers more confidence and before the break Barnes-Homer went close to doubling the advantage with a curled shot from the edge of the penalty area that went narrowly over the bar. A defensive mix-up almost cost Harriers early in the second half; Dean Coleman was left stranded by his defence and was lobbed by Dale Binns but Caines got back to head the ball away at the last moment at the expense of a corner. Shortly afterwards Binns was involved again as his cross was met poorly by Danny Allen-Page who headed wide of the far post. McPhee went close with a glorious 25-yard shot after bringing down Coleman's clearance and turning to shoot in one smooth movement. As the game wore on Hayes had two great chances to have snatched something from the game as first Binns crossed from the left for Ram Marwa who blazed his shot over the bar then Esmond James did the same thing from a James Mulley cross. In the last minute McPhee set up John Finnigan, making his debut from the bench, but his 25-yard shot was parried by Overland. |
