Caines 9 Professional Foul | |||
Referee: Paul Davison (Cleveland) |
Harriers were narrowly edged out at Bootham Crescent after being forced to play over 80 minutes with just ten men after Gavin Caines was sent-off. Showing just one change from the team that drew at Forest Green in midweek, Robbie Matthews coming in in place of the suspended Dean Bennett, Harriers got off to a flying start; David McDermott's cross from the right found an unmarked Brian Smikle at the far post who with a diving header scored his fifth goal of the season. There were just 100 seconds on the clock. The lead was short-lived, however, as in the ninth minute Harriers were caught out by a long ball through the inside-right channel; Richard Brodie got into the penalty area and was brought down from behind by Caines who was given his marching orders. Brodie took the penalty himself and managed to get it past the fingertips of Dean Coleman who dived the right way. Youth team midfielder Nathan Hayward was brought on shortly afterwards in place of the unfortunate Darryl Knights. Chris McPhee dropped back into the middle of the defence and Hayward proceeded to run the midfield with another assured performance. Sloppy defending just past the half-hour mark let in Brodie again to fire The Minstermen ahead. Despite the handicap of having one less player Harriers were more than matching their hosts and could, and maybe should, have gone into the break level. Five minutes before the interval Matthews' cross from the left was flicked on by Martin Riley to McDermott who fired wide across the face of goal. Moments later Hayward's long ball forward was headed over by Matthews, then in stoppage time McDermott's dangerous looking cross from the right was headed clear by Djoumin Sangare. Twelve minutes into the second half Harriers suffered a further setback when Adam Smith's cross from the right found Michael Gash who was left with an easy header to make it 3-1. Harriers kept going, though, and four minutes later were back in the game when McDermott's short free-kick was drilled in from 25 yards or more by Matt Barnes-Homer, although home keeper Michael Ingham was more than culpable allowing the ball to squirm through his grasp and into the back of the net. Harriers pressed forward in search of an equaliser and Hayward's pass found Matthews who made a good turn and then shot straight at Ingham who wasn't being tested enough when it was clear that he was struggling with injury. The visitors dominated possession in the latter stages and their performance deserved to get at least a point; had they had ten men on the field throughout they most likely would have taken something from the game. Late on another McDermott corner from the left looked dangerous but City managed to get it headed clear for another corner. An intricate passing move ended with Hayward setting up Barnes-Homer but his 20-yard effort flew over the bar and then shortly afterwards McDermott's volley was cleared off the line by Sangare. |
