Harriers advanced into the last four of the FA Trophy for the fifth time in their history and second time in three years thanks to a late winner from Robbie Matthews. Steve Burr made two changes from the team that had beaten Forest Green Rovers a week previously with Darryl Knights coming in for the cup-tied Marc Goodfellow and Ross Atkins coming in for his debut in goal in place of the injured Dean Coleman. Atkins was called into action early on; after just ten minutes Harriers failed to clear a throw-in from the United right and the ball fell to ex-Harrier Mark Creighton who fired a low shot through a crowd of legs that the keeper did well to parry, he also parried the follow up from Jamie Cook but the latter was offside and play was halted. Harriers took the lead on 17 minutes; a swift counter-attack from a failed United corner saw Duane Courtney clear the ball to Knights who switched the play out onto the right wing where Dean Bennett made a surging run before rolling the ball in towards the near post and Brian Smikle who tucked it past Billy Turley to record his tenth goal of the season. The visitors were in control of the game now but the match became scrappy and concentrated in midfield with little goalmouth action for the remainder of the half, but Harriers were happy to go into the break with the advantage. After the interval United found another gear and came out with more purpose and quickly began to get on top. On 64 minutes they leveled the scores but it was a mix-up between Atkins and Martin Riley that handed them the opportunity, the goalkeeper and defender getting in each other's way allowing Matt Green an easy tap-in. Harriers were forced to hit United on the break but started to get back into the game as it moved into the closing stages. Nine minutes from time a counter-attack saw Smikle break clear but once into the penalty area he delayed hitting his shot for too long and only won a corner. Two minutes later he made amends, however; starting the move in midfield with a pass to John Finnigan he made his run on the right wing to take the return pass, did well to beat Kevin Sandwith to get to the byline and pull the ball back to substitute Robbie Matthews who fired in from close range. In stoppage time Harriers could have made the game safe; Finnigan made a good run on the right, cutting inside and switching the play to the opposite flank to Matthews whose cross to the far post found Spencer who narrowly missed the target with a diving header. There was not much longer to hold on, though, and the referee's whistle sparked scenes of delirium amongst the 417 traveling Harriers supporters in the stand as well as the players on the pitch. |
