Harriers overcame difficult conditions and a stubborn Southport side to extend their lead at the top of the Conference. Icy winds blowing in from the north east gave the feel of sub-zero temperatures and were strong enough that the team kicking into the wind struggled to get the ball out of their own half. Steve Burr made two changes to the team that had won at Newport in midweek, bringing in Kyle Storer in place of James Vincent and Martin Devaney in place of Danny Pilkington. The manager signalled his attacking intentions, though, with a subs' bench that included no defenders. There were early chances for Harriers when Devaney's cross evaded both Anthony Malbon and Michael Gash and then Malbon being denied by a well timed block by Simon Grand after he mis-controlled Mickey Demetriou's cross. After these, however, the home side began to take control of the game, adapting better to the conditions with the wind behind them. Harriers took the lead two minutes before the break; Keith Briggs made a strong run at the centre of the home defence before sliding the ball to his right to the overlapping Lee Vaughan who saw his shot parried by Southport's debutant keeper Ben Smith only as far as Gash at the far post who lashed in his fifth goal in as many games. Southport needed just twelve minutes of the second half to draw level; Danny Hattersley was allowed to run unchallenged for too long before hitting a dipping shot towards the top corner of the Harriers net. The introduction midway through the second half of Pilkington and Vincent changed the game in Harriers' favour; Pilkington almost restored Harriers' advantage within five minutes of coming on, picking up Danny Jackman's pass on the left he cut inside and curled a shot towards the far post that Smith tipped away for a corner. Harriers finally regained the lead four minutes from time; Gash on the right wing found Malbon in the inside right channel who curled a shot from 25 yards inside the far post. In the last minute the result was made safe when Pilkington's looping cross from wide on the right was only palmed out by Smith to the feet of Ryan Rowe who tucked in his eleventh goal of the season. With Mansfield's game with Macclesfield postponed, Harriers' win moved them three points clear at the top of the league putting pressure on the chasing clubs to win their games in hand. |
